The best reason is that it is FUN!!! If you don’t think that it will be fun then you definitely shouldn’t do it. If you have the whisky bug you won’t need to be told that tasting, nosing, sampling, discussing, re-tasting and enjoying are the reasons that whisky fans drink whisky in preference to other drinks. To debate the endless complexities of the flavour of a whisky, and compare it’s merits to those of other whiskies are what make it so interesting and exciting.
What then, could be better than getting together with a group of friends and buying your own cask?
If you buy a young cask, you get to experience the joy of sampling it as it matures and witnessing the effect that time in the wood has on the spirit. You can visit the distillery where it was produced or is stored, get to know the people involved in the production process. Best of all, you decide when the whisky tastes just right, and when to bottle it. When it comes to labelling the bottles, you can personalise them with your group name and photograph, which makes the cask and bottling unique and special to you.
If you buy an older cask, you have the advantage of being able to bottle it immediately if you wish, with no further need for storage. You can have the cask re-gauged (if it hasn’t already been re-gauged). A single cask of mature whisky is a completely unique product, different to every other example of that whisky which you have tasted before. The ability to taste a small sample before you buy assures you of the quality of the product. You have the opportunity to do the mathematics yourself, calculating the cost per bottle. When doing this, you will find that the bottles are very good value for money. Again, personalised labels put the finishing touch on your own unique piece of the whisky world.
Mature casks of whisky are not generally available from distilleries, who mostly sell only new make spirit to private individuals. Therefore buying a mature cask from whiskybroker.co.uk saves you the long storage period where you must wait before you can appreciate the final product.
Another reason to buy a cask of whisky is that if you have a group of friends (or don’t mind having a large number of bottles), the whisky is exceptionally good value for money.
Possibly a less exciting reason to buy a cask of whisky is as an investment. If you have an outlet for your bottles then around £1000 for a cask, plus warehouse rent for say 10 years, will give you an exceptionally cheap 10 year old whisky (see Approximate Cask Yield Page for an approximate number of bottles per cask size and age).
